Name: Bernard Hopkins History of Bernard Hopkins Boxing CareerBernard Hopkins was born and raised in Philadelphia. Hopkins turned to wrong early in his life and at 17 years old, Hopkins was sentenced to 18 years in prison for 9 felonies. While in prison he witnessed rapes and the murder of another convict over a pack of cigarettes but he also exposed his passion for boxing. After serving almost five years, he was free from prison and at once turned professional. He lost his debut light heavyweight fight and after a 16 month layoff, he resumed his boxing career as a middleweight and won 22 straight fights with 16 coming by Knockout. His first prospect at a world title came in 1993 against Roy Jones Jr for the vacant IBF title but Hopkins lost a agreed decision.Jones deserted the middleweight ranks in 1994, and Hopkins fought Segundo Mercado for the IBF title. Their first fight ended in a draw but in the rematch, Hopkins became a world champion by stopping Mercado in the 7th round.Hopkins defended his title 12 times without a loss while beating standouts as John David Jackson & Glen Johnson. The arrival of Felix Trinidad into the middleweight division set off a series of fusion bouts. Hopkins won the WBC title and in Sept. 2001, Trinidad challenged Hopkins for a middleweight merger at MSG. Hopkins dominated Trinidad and stopped in the 12th round as he became the first undeniable middleweight champ since Marvin Hagler.Hopkins continued shielding his titles a total of 21 times before he fought the heir apparent Jermain Taylor. Hopkins lost his undisputed championship via split decision and lost the rematch by unanimous decision. Hopkins was distress as he felt he won both fights and decided to move up to the light heavyweight division. There he beat champion Antonio Tarver and followed it up by a win over Ronald "Winky" Wright.Hopkins would then defy super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. Despite knocking down Calzaghe in the opening round, Hopkins lost a split decision. But a few months later he took on the then unbeatable undisputed middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik at light heavyweight. Hopkins turned back the time and stunned the boxing world with another vintage performance.Bernard Hopkins is commonly recognized as one of the best fighters at any weight. He is also one of the best middleweights in boxing history. A fifteen and a half year pro, he holds the all-time record for the number of successful middleweight world title defences with twenty. Bernard Hopkins is a master craftsman of the sweet science. For years, watching the future Hall of Fame middleweight and light heavyweight champion in the ring has been like watching a master painter at work. Using broad strokes and subtle nuances, Hopkins painted opponents with his fists – a jab here, a hook there, a dash across the ring, and a right cross for emphasis.
