History of Marco Barrera Boxing Career

Marco Antonio Barrera is a previous 3 time division champion hailing from Mexico City. As an amateur, Barrera had a smashing record of 55-4 and was a five time Mexican National Champion. At the young age of 15, Marco turned professional and defeated David Felix by knockout in the 2nd round. That triumph marked the beginning of a 43 fight win streak.  In 1995, Barrera won his first world title by defeating Puerto Rican Daniel Cobrita Jimenez and became the WBO Super Bantamweight champion. By this time, many boxing journalist were calling Barrera “Mexico’s next Julio Cesar Chavez”. He made 4 more title defenses before the year was done.  On February 6, 2006, Marco fought against Kennedy McKinney on the first installment of HBO’s Boxing After Dark series. It turned out to be one of Marco’s most outstanding fights as he and McKinney engaged in a violent fight that ended in a dramatic 12th round knockout by Barrera.
